We borrowed this book Classic Curries by Lisa Dyer from a used book dealer and tried several of the curry recipes. Unlike the curry you purchase from the Indian takeaway, which are mainly Bangladeshi and made with meat, many of the curries in this book were both Indian and Bangladeshi.

Our next tester is 87 years old, she lives on her own, does not really eat well and is fed up with food. We took her along to the Morrison Supermarket in Cheriton, she was amazed at the selection of TV dinners available and the prices. She selected Bangers and Mash in Gravy at £1.00, the image suggested that it was onion gravy and asked her to keep the box. Getting an 87 year old to break a habit of a life time is difficult so the box was disposed of nearly instantly. We believe this meal was a Morrison own brand.
The meal was cooked in a microwave using the times given on the box, Else thought the calories, salt and fat content were acceptable, we noted that she checked this before she purchased the meal. For her needs she thought the meal was sufficient, would be OK for a child but a little small for an adult or teenager. She enjoyed the meal and said she would return to Morrison’s and see what else they had.

We are not picking on any particular supermarket, we chose Morrison’s first because they appeared to have the better and more varied selection of TV style meals for both content and price. The first meal we tried was Steak and Kidney Pie, vegetables and Chips. As with most frozen foods the instructions were simple either oven cook or microwave. We choose to Microwave in a Microwave that cost all of £35. The time indicated 14 minutes on full power.
The manufacturer of this meal was Kershaw, the image on the box looked very appetising, the cost £1.49 was very reasonable. We wanted to publish the information relating to salt and fat content but the person whose kitchen we used disposed of the box before we could gather that information.
